Emailing and instant messaging are different. You can make faces and soundeffects. Also if you don't know their email address you can leave a message on their messenger. But instant messages you can talk back and forth faster. It takes a while for the mail to go through and you to respond back as fast. I used to email someone when my messenger wasn't working.

Yes you need a Email account to send bigger text and photos. IM works different then EMail.

Well the messages you get on YM aren't stored unless you want them to be. An email account is more official and allows you to store messages.
