It really isn't all that expensive. The initial buy-in is enough to dissuade people who aren't serious, but, after that, the dues are calculated as a function of what you EARN on SAG-sanctioned jobs. An actor who isn't getting any/much work is paying minimal dues, whereas an actor at the top of the food chain pays a great deal more.

Never forget: the performing arts unions are UNIONS, after all. They require substantial operating funds to mainstain the staffs of people who work to improve conditions for actors. My experience with my primary union (AEA) has taught me that, whatever I'm paying them...it's worth it.

There are a lot of people who are actors who are really just waiters or copy boys. SAG really wants to support working actors who can make somewhat of a living from acting, which, of course, is really difficult. I think that SAG operates under the principle that if it were easy to get in, then everyone would join

it's an exclusive club, and they don't want everyone joining it.

but it's well worth it. one of my friends just got in it, and it makes it alot easier to negotiate pay. plus they have to cast SAGs before they cast regular actors. think of it as a union.

it is an investment (2,000 to start), but it's worth it b/c MOST of the members aren't the 'stars' and don't know when their next role is. only a few of the superstars make bank, the rest of them get alot of money when they have a part, but have to live off that while they are looking for another one, which isn't a certainty

Im not sure, but Im in it, and it is pretty expensive. my mom pays for it. but i guess since if your a sag member, your making alot of commercials and shows, so SAG feels that they could charge you more money.

It's sort of like an exclusive club, not everyone can get in.
