Calcium carbonate is also called limestone. Most probably, it formed from the reaction of calcium oxide in water with dissolved carbon dioxide: CaO + CO2 -> CaCO3. This salt is not very soluble in water, and as water evaporates from a pool, the salt forms a scale on surfaces. People with "hard water" have a large concentration of CaCO3 or the bicarbonate in water, and use ion exchangers with common salt to exchange sodium for calcium. The sodium salts are more soluble, and calcium chloride is more soluble.
