i gotta go with either magic or stockton,i think stockton was a better true point guard but then he never led his team to championship....and magic did so in that respect magic....of course cousey maybe could be a candidate but i dont think he would be the great player he was in the newer era

Dear Antown W,

i would say Magic Johnson is. First because if you're old school like me- the most important thing is winning rings. Magic took the Lakers from the worst team in the league (hence the #1 pick) to the NBA Championship and won a lot of rings. This is why he gets the nod over: Stockton and Robertson.

Magic is not a classic point guard because of his size- but no one can run the fast break like Magic and along with Bird they revolutionized the game. Robertson had better numbers and i don't know that anyone will ever average a triple-double again- but i don't think he revolutionzed the game.

Magic developed a post game that allowed him to draw double teams thus creating open shots for his team- and just once again his court vision- amazing!!!

Sorry folks, but the greatest point guard in history was Oscar Robertson. He was one of the most complete players ever.

In his first 5 years in the league, he AVERAGED 30 ppg , 10 rpg, and 10 apg.

He was the only guard to finish in the top ten in rebounds, and led the league in assists 8 times. He was also the only player in history to lead the league in scoring, assists, and free throw percentage in the same year. Plus he was an excellent defender, although blocks and steals were not an official statistic until after he retired.

He quite simply did everything on the basketball court well. He had no weakness. Unfortunately, he played way before ESPN and 24 hour sports channels.

I would put Magic as a very close second, though. He was big for a point guard and was one of the best at setting up teammates. Kareem once said that Magic knows where your best shot is, even if you don't.

"Nickster".....the Lakers were not the worst team in the league before Magic joined the team. They actually had the 4th best record in the west with a record of 47-35. Magic improved them by 13 games (60-22).

Cincinnati never put any players around "O", plus he played the same time as the Celtic dynasty. If you put Magic on that team, I'd doubt he'd fare much better.

When Robertson joined the Bucks, they won a championship in his first year, and 60+ wins every year he played with them. You can't judge a players greatness based on championships. There's other factors that go along with winning titles.

to the guy who said magic couldn't play defense. in the 1980 finals Kareem got hurt so Magic played center, he scored 42 points, had 15 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, lifting the Lakers to a 123-107 win and winning the NBA Finals MVP award. No defense huh. And where's Stockton's rings.

Gotta go with Magic. He changed that whole position with his size and passing. Definitely the most talented player to play point guard. Also keep in mind that between points and assist, Magic was responsible for producing 51 points for every 48 minutes of basketball he played making him the most productive offensive player of our era.

Stockton to Malone!! Without John Stockton there would have been no Karl Malone...John Stockton is the best PG of all time...Some people will say Magic (hes a close 2nd) but the only reason he has such a legendary sense around him is because hes a Laker...all Lakers tend to be overexaggerated (COUGH KOBE COUGH)

John Stockton is the best point guard in NBA history, period. Anyone who doesn't agree simply doesn't know basketball. He's the all-time assists leader, and all-time steals leader...and no one could ever execute the pick-and-roll the way Stockton/Malone did. Unlike, most "point guards" today, Stockton thought, pass first - shoot second. And when he did shoot...hell, I won't even finish this sentence...shear genius.

I repeat - John Stockton is the best point guard in NBA history, period.

Magic Johnson is the best in history not only because of his talent but also because of his impact in the game of basketball. A rare breed.

John Stockton- He was incredible, a joy to watch. Smart, great passer, shooter, and dribbler. Also, quite the pickpocket on the defensive end. A fabulous basketball player.
