I agree with the other posters, most of them have been very low quality for the most part. However I must admit that I was actually pretty impressed with the Silent Hill adaptation. While I think it could have been a little better, I thought they did a good job of creating an original story that closely matched the "feel" of the video games. The acting was good (although a few actors "hammed it up" a bit much), the effects were amazing, and the cinematography was excellent (IMO). They even used some of the original soundtrack from some of the games. If you haven't seen that one yet (and are a fan of the games), I suggest you give that one a try.
Also, the HALO movie could be promising (if they actually get the financing and contracts, deals, etc. sorted for it and get if off the ground and into production). It would be great if Peter Jackson and/or Guillermo Del Toro were still involved (as once rumored).
I think a lot of video games do have the potential to be adapted into decent movies. I just think they should stop letting Uwe Boll and Paul WS Anderson direct them all (no offense to either of those guys, but they have subjected us to a few stinkers these past few years, haven't they?)... I must say I'm feeling apprehensive about the news that Mr. Anderson will be taking on Castlevania as one of his next projects...

I think the make or break point is the amount of effort they put into the script and whether they are taking a serious approach to doing a faithful adpatation of the game to the screen. If it will be FX dependent, you need the budget to make it work as well.
Unfortunately, it seems it's much more miss than hit in making a successful video game movie. For the small number of good ones (Mortal Kombat 1, Resident Evil, etc) there are a lot more Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, House of the Dead, etc.bad ones.

Usually video games that are inspired by movies aren't that user-friendly. Like, Fantastic 4 which followed the storyline of the movie to begin with and then changed but no matter what it was a linear game. Good game are non-linear where you can choose which way to go.
However, sometimes there are good movies that are inspired or based on video games. Like, in my opinion, Resident Evil.

I can't think of a good video game based on a movie!
Kingdom Hearts would be the closest I can think of since it does use various Disney characters and movie settings for the different worlds in the game. But it's not technically based off any one movie.
I think most of them stick because you know the outcome already!

it actually relies upon on own opinion. I own would choose to ascertain marvel proper alliance made right into a action picture. Gta isn't a stable determination, i repeat gta isn't a stable determination. Whats the character going to do? keep killing human beings and steal autos. it gets uninteresting. Halo is a stable determination.

If a movie is good, then the game might be also. For the most part though I would stay away myself.

I thought the 'Friday The 13th' video game I bought for my Atari 2600 was 'really bad'. I mean 'really bad'. Not just bad but 'really, really - really bad'! ;-) LOL! But better than ET!
