How long is long?
I wouldnt go past 2 sentences as then it looks like you are trying to just put crap in there to take up space.
Use paraphasing when you can.

Usually not. Professors want to see your writing quality, and your analysis, not the writing and ideas directly from someone else. You can put in long quotes, but depending on the length of the paper. For instance, in a 2-5 page paper a quote longer than one sentence would be excessive. On the other hand, in a 15 page term paper, a several-sentence long quote that you use to analyze the topic further could be acceptable.
Most importantly, you will need to show your own ideas, and not just paste in quotes in lieu of your own analysis.

Yes you can. If you do, be sure to follow appropriate APA format. It dictates that the quote is highly indented and I believe single spaced. As long as a research paper is not inundated with quotes, and the one you want to use is important, go for it. You can always break it up and fragment the quote as well.

Definitely put it in the opening paragraph but only if it really applies to the entire paper and not just a single idea within the essay. It would probably be best to open up with the quote. Hope you get an A :D
