Movies have always used special effects to create the illusion of reality. These days, computer animation enables filmmakers to produce much more realistic and involving effects than used to be possible. Some movies do seem to be all about the effects, to the detriment of plot, character, or anything else, but that's not really new either. An as long as there are temporarily or permanently adolescent males, there will be a market for movies whose plot summary is "stuff blows up".
