I thought Utah was a more conservative state. That mayor has some extreem views from what I am hearing in various media or is that wrong?

While the state of Utah is predominately Mormon, the city of Salt Lake currently has a higher non-Mormon population than Mormon. And a large portion of non-Mormon's in Utah feel they must be extreme in their views to put the Mormons in their 'place'. So, they voted in the nut, not the Mormons.

Typically, Mormons vote very conservatively and most Mormons can't stand Rocky for ripping off the Church in the whole Main Street mess a few years back.

The population of Salt Lake City is about 50% Mormon. Apparently, all the non-Mormons voted for him. And, he does have some extreme views.

I know, I was suprised he was elected there. He is great though. Here is a speech he gave outlining the foolishness of Bush. Eh, Mormons can't be too bad if they elected this guy.
