Contact your Cooperative Extension Service for your county/state. These are degreed professionals who work with both the public as well as the landscape industry. To find them either look in the phone book, blue pages under your county....or it may be faster to do a Google putting your state with Cooperative Extension Service and then follow thru to your local agent.

At first they may put you in touch with their Master Gardener program. If you are not confident with the answers, get back to the agent personally. Also the CES has publications that address specific topics like composting. If you need more in depth info and the agent can't give you the answer, they will contact the university faculty or researcher on that topic.

Also many of these publications are on the web. As someone mentioned above, do specific searches, you'll find the publications from various states.

Composting works even if you're lazy. it will merely take longer if you don't turn your pile & stuff.

A "pile" is all you need. Though if you are concerned about aethetics, or if your neighbors are a bit blah blah blah, then use a composting container.

Veggies - grow what you like to eat. To give specific advice, we need to know what you want to grow. There are lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of different things to grow, and some have special needs.

Tell us what you like, and where you lie, and we'll get more specific blah blah blah.

General advice:

Start small.
Pay attention to how much sun you get.
Water during times of no rain.
Mulch. (In a veggie garden - mulch with something OTHER than hardwood - like leaves, straw, newspapers, landscaping fabric...there are lots of options)

Check out these websites (below) and also if you are a beginner than try Gardening for Dummies & Vegetable Gardening for Dummies~~ sounds kinda of silly but let me tell you~ their books are concise, have lots of easy to find information and are great to pull down off the shelf to find a quick answer... I do from time to time and I LOVE thier planting charts!

The best advice I can give you is do lots of research, do it organically, talk to other people (especially local farmers), get involved with the local gardening and farming movement, make LOTS of mistakes, plant more than you think you will need, and have LOTS AND LOTS of fun!!!!! Oh ps... I have an organic produce farm so if you have any questions just send me a message... I LOVE what I do and I LOVE that other people are growing too!!! GOOD LUCK!!
