In order to develop an independent human colony on Mars, you must have...

1. The means to get there.
2. The energy, technology, and material resources needed to survive there in perpetuity.

Number 1 is hard. Number 2 is much harder.

I think it can be done, but I also think that it would be so expensive to do that nobody will do it.

Within good airtight enclosures, ones that won't break down from exposure to solar UV, heated by nuclear power or by concentrated solar power, it might be possible for humans to survive for a while. But in the longterm, there might be problems with food, water, or air. For example, Mars might be deficient in some of the elements required for life, such as nitrogen, necessary for growing food.

Used water and air can be reprocessed, if enough energy is at hand, but I think that probably reclaimation will be less than 100% efficient, which means that additional water and atmosphere gases will have to be found on the planet somewhere and brought to the colony.

Also, technology doesn't last forever. Indeed, it is notorious for breaking down. You'd need an industrial base, able to replicate itself with redundancy, as well as replace or repair all other machines and devices in the colony.

You (and many others) need to clarify what you mean by "destroying Earth". The Earth has not been destroyed in its 4.5 billion year history, as you have probably noticed.

If you mean destroy humanity, that does not need the Earth to be destroyed.

To destroy civilisation, and leave fragments of disenfranchised humanity, requires even less destruction. A 200 metre asteroid could so ravage essential parts of the world, that the world's economy collapses.

So, which one do you mean? The Earth survived severe bombardement in its early history, and local space is a billion times safer now than it was back 4 billion years ago, so the physical destruction of the Earth is not going to happen til the sun goes red giant or nova.

Dear Sir:

At this time there is no where to go.

Taking only a few people somewhere, say to the Moon, means that you have to take sufficient water, food, air, and equipment to sustain life for an indefinite period of time. At this time there is no way to do that.

Let me suggest to you a simple experimant that will help you get this idea into your mind correctly...

Go to the closet in your bedroom. Empty it completely out. Now, this space is to be your home for the next 12 months.
So, begin filling it up with all the bottles of water, juice, and sodas, you will need to drink in 12 months. Next, add in all the dried foods that you will need to eat for 12 months. Next, all the toilet paper and washing things you will need over a 12 month period, and a portable toilet with lots of plastic trash bags to put the toilet waste into. Now, you will need a radio, a television, telephone, and a quantity of books with a reading light. Pencils and paper might be a good idea to keep track of names and telephone numbers. Clothes...you will need enough clothes for a year without doing any clothes washing.

Climb into the closet and see how long you can stay there without coming out.

This is a semi realistic example. What is missing is the lack of AIR. You must carry with you all of the air that you will need for a year. You could carry a machine that makes air from various chemicals, but that machine takes power and materials to operate, and the machine itself takes up space.

You must do this for everyone who goes on the Escape Trip.

That is a rough row to hoe... And we have the problem of what to do once you reach the end of your supplies? What then?

more likely than mars, would be to evacuate to the moon temporarily to develop the technologies and test the procedures and equipment to provide perpetual sources of key elements needed for life to be sustained... or artificial sources for the same needs.. then, once it was accomplished, there would be small scale evacuations to a planet such as mars to test the stuff again to make sure its not all gonna fail and destroy all human life after all that hard work to prevent that..

i personally.. wouldn't even bother.. i believe you can be a scientist as well as religious... and i am a christian. and i think.. when the end comes... as it surely is comming, i'll be ready to go be with our heavenly Father.

I have had numerous people say i can't be an unbiased science geek and be christian.. and ijust say.. i beg to differ.. i seperate the 2 aspects of my life completely and neither has anything to do with the other... its easy for me.

so yeah.. when the end comes, ya'll can evacuate and plan your escape.. i'll be chilling with everyone i love and just wait for it to happen.

Scientifically speaking, if we found out tomorrow that the Earth was going to be destroyed, we would all die. That would be the same answer for many many years....we don't have the technology to move massive amounts of people to anywhere. We won't ahve the technology to move numerous amounts of people and resources to another planet for at least 100 years. We are to primitive for that.

Fictionally speaking, sure!

first, the only planet anywhere near us that is inhabitable by humans is earth. we can't survive on mars nor on venus nor on the moon. we need air to breathe, food to eat and water to drink. none of that exists except here on earth. not to mention of course our need for a temp range of 40C, some protection from radiation, and our desire for light and entertainment.

second, a trip to mars takes about 6 months in a spacecraft.
we do not have spaceships capable of taking us humans to mars at this time.

third, designing and building spacecrafts to take humans into space takes oh say a decade. you better have some really good forecasting folks....

fourth, the spacecraft we have built so far can carry oh say 7 astronauts at most into space. There are 6 billion people living on this planet. will you be one of the few who get a ride?

This is it. earth. it's all we have at this time. better make it work......

Best thing to do:

1) Stay away from all windows.
2) Keep hands free of glass, cigarettes, knives, etc.
3) Stand away from bars, tables, orchestra equipment, and other furniture.
4) Loosen necktie, loosen clothes, unbutton restrictive articles.
5) Remove all sharp objects from pockets, such as pens, pencils, glasses, etc.
6) Immediately after seeing explosion of comet, asteroid, etc., bend over and place your head firmly between your legs.
7) THEN KISS YOUR A55 GOOD-BYE.

You're naive if you think the likes of us would get to live on mars.

Our goverments would only take the rich and powerful, the gifted and intelligent, and the best of mankind. the rest of us would be left behind.

So unless you are very rich and powerful with a lot of influence, or you are very gifted and extremely intelligent..you dont have a chance in hell to be picked.

There can be no life on Mars, it is uninhabitable. So, grab a drink, schmooze a guy/girl and kiss your butt goodbye

We don't have the technology. We can't even get out of low earth orbit.
