It is a verbal imitation of a drum sequence used to punctuate a (corny) joke. The drum sequence is called a "sting," and sometimes (erroneously) called a "rimshot."

My recollection is that it originated in Vaudeville shows, but Wikipedia says Cabaret. In either case, that would put it at least 70 years old, and probably closer to 100 years old.
