1. We take care of our young for longer than any other species (weaning age is, what, 18 years? vs some organisms who are on their own from birth)
2. Altruism: if the parents die, another member of the family will step in and take care of the child
3. High survival rate at birth and through youth: with medicine, nutrition, etc, we can make sure children survive to reproductive age
4. Speech: lets us communicate, so that we can plan and hunt; important in not starving or in creating decent shelter (igloos, etc)
5. Tools: can be thought of as a subset of speech, since we needed it to figure out and convey how to make tools
6. Dexterity: we can use tools; opposable thumbs put us ahead of the game!
7. Genetic diversity: so we're not extremely diverse, but we have more alleles for genes than, say, cheetahs; if there's a bad combination of alleles and the one child dies, there are plenty of other good combinations of alleles that allows many more children to survive
There are probably tons more. Hope this helps!

Females have a long fertility period, generally about twenty years or more. So the fact that only one child is produced at a time is irrelevant. Like most large mammals we can produce one per year. We end up with more offspring than parents.
We have a relatively low infant mortality rate, due to controlling our environment, and being able to catch our own food. We don't lose children to cold weather etc.
We are at the top of the food chain. We are not often hunted and eaten.
We have developed a tribal society, where protection is offered to smaller, weaker members, this increases survival of the whole tribe.

1. The human female can reproduce at a rate of 1 child per year, this means that a female during her sexual maturity can produce upto 40 children (starting at the age of 12 and finishing at the age of 52).
2. The human species is good at adapting and can live in many different environments and adapt either to the environment or adapt the environment to there own needs and requirements

Our brains: We have developed the ability to reason, make logical deductions and choices, foresee the effects of our actions, plan for survival under many situations, build and use tools (hammers to PC's) understand and treat illness and/or injury, develope defences against aggressors and pass information and knowledge to others.
Our aggressive nature: We have distroyed anything in our way, risen to the top of the food chain because of our brains and use of tools and killed or taken whatever we thought we wanted or needed. Because we are successfull predators and builders, our off-spring are better fed, healthier and protected against enemies.
