Did the turn into mushrooms? I remember a movie called Attack of the Mushroom People. I use to watch it a lot when I was younger.

Both the previous answers are correct. Originally in Japan it was called Matango in 1963. It was released in the US as Attack of the Mushroom People. It is my choice for the worst movie ever made. It's a hoot!!!
