I had a son a few months ago and we named him Madison Isaiah. I had done some research on his name before he was born and the meaning of Madison is son of Mathew. I also found out Madison was a boys name from the 1800's untill around 1980 when Daryl Hannah was in the movie Splash then it became a popular girls name. But is for either or... Well anyway I have been getting ALOT of Grief over his name everytime I go to the doc office or any such place they always say "She" I am now wondering if I made a big BOO BOO in naming him that. Do you think we should start calling him Isaiah...I know I can't cry over spilled milk as the saying goes..but I was just wondering what you all thought. Thanks :0)

You know, I named my son Gabriel, also known as Gabrielle for a girl. Every time we go to the Dr., or anywhere else for an appointment I hear "she", especially when he was younger (he's 2 now), because he is a very beautiful child so people always mistook him as a girl. I correct each one of them, and just let it roll off my shoulder. I think Madison is a strong boys name, and I am still happy I chose Gabriel, even though the world can't seem to get it right.

You shouldn't feel bad........ Just think of all the mothers that named their sons Taylor, Peyton, Bailey, Riley, ect. You never know when a "boys" name will be taken over by the girls anyway. The same thing happened generations ago when Ashley, Courtney, Leslie, and Carol where all masculine names lol. Anyway, I like the answer above about nicknaming him Madin..... It's not that far from Madison and it's really cool sounding :)

Well, my name is Dana and I get called 'he' frequently or rather-got called 'he' in school when called to the office. It's rather annoying...I see Madison as being a feminine name despite its meaning (I don't rely much on 'meanings' anyway) and Isaiah would be a safer name to g o by in school and such.

I always tend to think of Madison as a girls name (sorry, no offense), however, if you had named him "Shannon" or "Terry" you would be in the same boat. I'd say that since you did so much research on the name BEFORE you gave it to him, then you should embrace it. I don't know how difficult it would be to change his name on the birth certificate, but if I were in your shoes, I would keep his name as is, and correct everyone who calls him a her.
Coincidentally enough, I have an odd first name for a girl, Donika, that everyone mis-pronounces. It's pronounced just like the name "Monica", but most people I encounter say it like "Doneeka". I love my name because it's super unique, I just hate the misprouncing I've dealt with my whole life (31 years).
If you would rather call him by his middle name, that's fine, but to me, that symbolizes that you don't really care for his given name, or are embarrased by it. If you want him to have a nickname, I'd say call him something like "Maddy" for short. It'll catch on soon enough.

Good luck and congrats on the "new" baby!

I understand why you named him that, but I would probably call him Isaiah. He will get lots of grief unfortunately in school from the other kids if called Madison.

I wouldn't name my son Madison, it may have been popular in the 1800's but it's rare to see a male Madison these days.

Yes, definitely call him Isaiah. it's so frustrating when somebody calls your son 'she.' it's so frustrating when anybody calls the other person the wrong gender. The name might have been a boy's name in the 1800, but now, it has changed to a girl's name.

I think your son's own doctor's office should know he is a boy. As for others opinions, do you dress him in a way that he would be mistaken for a girl? You know, neutral colors or style.
You could use his initials as a nickname, or stick with Isaiah. Most likely it will be shortened to Ike or Izzy though.
There are sooo many worse names you could have chosen, just be creative and don't be hard on yourself. When he is old enough to decide, let him.
Congrats on your son.

Personally, i would just call him Maddy. I like the name Madison and when he gets older he will tell people to call him whichever name he likes best.
