I've had no problems with a 2003 Honda Civic until
I tried to start it tonight and the Key icon was flashing on the
instrument panel and car would not start. Someone jumped me
but when I turned key off - the car is dead again.

Any advice??? Do you think someone tried to break in??
Why would this happen???? Not sure what to do next.
Thx.

the problem is not with the immobilizer system but I would bet that you just have a dead battery. when an unauthorized key is used to try to start the car the engine will crank (turn over) as though it is trying to start but the engine will not start. That is because the immobilizer system is turning off the fuel injectors and the ignition system so that the car will not start.

if you needed a jump start to get the car running the battery is dead. it probably has just enough of a charge to turn the lights on and play the radio but not enough electrical energy to turn the starter motor.

once the car starts it runs off the alternator and the excess energy that the alternator produces recharges the battery. if the battery has gone bad, it won't accept the recharge so it won't restart after the car has been shut off.

the normal life of an original Honda battery is 3-5 years. You're right in the range where the original battery life is expired.

have the battery tested and I'll bet you find out that its bad. Replace the battery and your problems will be solved.

I'll send you so info on the immobilize system to your email address but I am almost certain that your problem is the car battery and not the immobilizer

hope that helps

Each master key and valet key has electronic circuits in
its grip that outputs a rolling-type code (set by the
immobilizer control unit-receiver) when you insert the
key into the ignition switch. The immobilizer system
uses this code to determine whether to start the
engine.
You should have received a key number plate with your keys. You will need this key number if you ever have to get a key replaced. Keep the plate stored in a safe place.
If your Honda is equipped with an Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System, your keys contain a transmitter in the key head, which signals a control unit to activate the ignition system. Without this signal, your car will not start.
The Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System protects your vehicle from theft. A properly coded ignition key must be used in the ignition switch for the engine to start. If an improperly coded key (or other device) is used, the engine's starting circuit is disabled.
When you turn the ignition switch to ON (II), the Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System indicator light should come on for a few seconds, then go out. If the indicator starts to blink, it means the system does not recognize the coding of the key. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (O), remove the key, re-insert it and turn the switch to ON (II) again.
This indicator will also blink several times when you turn the ignition switch from ON (II) to ACCESSORY (I) or LOCK (O).
The system may not recognize your key's coding if the key is in contact with a key from another immobilizer system. If you have a key from another vehicle's immobilizer system, keep it separate.
If the system repeatedly does not recognize the coding of your key, contact your Honda dealer.
Do not attempt to alter this system or add other devices to it. Electrical problems could result that may make your vehicle inoperable.
