In response to your question ...

You have to start a corporation first and know what type of non-profit code is best for the organization you are creating. Many organizations obtain a 501c3, which is a private foundation. This is approved by IRS. There are lawyers that can file the necessay forms, as well as organizations.

However, you have alot of researching to do. You should not do this on your own or by someone who's inexperienced. There are questions you must address, as well as documents being developed. For instance, a business plan, bylaws, purpose, board of directors, if applicable. These are just a few. There's more to be done, of course.

Your greatest asset starting out will be to consult with a non-profit attorney and a CPA that handles non-profit organizations.

Take Care!
