Rattles are usually caused by the heat shields. They are usually spot-welded to the muffler, and the welds soon start to rust away. As soon as a few come loose, it will vibrate against the muffler - until the muffler warms up and expands, thus pushing on the shield and stopping the rattle.
Bad/broken/rusted muffler baffles don't make much noise at idle, but LOTS of noise when you're accelerating!

just kick the muffler and if it sounds like there is metal rattling, the baffles have rusted out. yes it is welded in place, but for around $60 and muffler shop can weld in a new one. a magnaflow muffler would be around $50 and it would make your car sound A LOT nicer too :)

Most likely the monolyth in the catalytic converter is falling apart.
Best to fix it before it crumbles down to a size where it can rotate 90 degrees and plug the outlet of the converter.
All exhaust pieces can be replaced separately if you're tooled and you know what you're doing.

im thinking its pobably the catalytic converter. the catalyst on inside the converter has cracked and causing the noise.
then as it heats up it expands and the noise may not be as evident. there are two of then on you jimmy. they are connected by a y pipe that lead down to the exhaust pipe and then to the muffler

It could be a baffle , it could also be the valve on the exhust manifold rattling because the linkage is loose or missing.
Any section of the exhust system can be replaced or repaired , (a little cutting and clamping)

before you start your car hit the muffler with a rubber mallet our something close to that, not to hard though,if it rattles you need a new one and it can be replaced.

More than likely, it's the heat shields.
