ok, I played this game of chess woth this guy I like and I want to know if he let me win or not. So can you guys tell me if this rule is true. Lets say there is the king and two rooks a couple spaces in front, all in one line. ok so if the king is able to kill one of the rooks, the other rook can kill the king. So is that putting yourself in check mate? and is there a rule that you can't put yourself in check mate?

No to the first question and Yes to the second question. 1. Technically, it would not be checkmate. Checkmate is when your king is in a threatened position and you have no moves remaining to remove the threat. 2. You are never allowed to move your king into a position where an opponent's piece may capture yours. As an aside, if he did this move and he had other moves remaining and you won because of this move, then he likes you, too.

You cannot put yourself in checkmate.

If a player is unable to make ANY (includes moving any other pieces) move without placing their King in check, the game is a stalemate.

If for some reason, you WANT to move into checkmate (like to give up), the rules don't allow that. The correct way to give up is to concede. This can be done verbally or by knocking over or laying down one's King.

The rules of the game state that you cannot move your king into check or checkmate. From what I understand from your description, capturing the rook in front with your king would put you in check(not necessarily checkmate), which is an illegal move.

to say it simply, checkmate is when ones king under the check and got no spare squares to go.
When u take that rook which is protected by another piece, u are violating the rules and u have to take ur king back to move to somewhere else unless u got no place to move.

What you describe is a piece protected by another piece. Since Kings cannot place themselves into check, you cannot put yourself in checkmate.

No, you can not move your king where it will be captured.

In some variations of speed chess that is possible.

Aside: if he let you win, he probably like you.

Or was bored out of his wits but liked you too much to hurt your feelings.

You can't really say that it's check or checkmate. There is a rule that you can't put yourself in check (or checkmate), meaning that move would be illegal.
