I dunno... just something i've been thinking about, since right now i'm sort of freaking out about a love interest pulling away. why is it that everyone loves music... can relate to certain songs and the passionate lyrics in them about love and yearning and desperately needing to be with a person... lyrics like "i was nothing before i met you..." or "so weak and powerless over you...." or "i'd die without you" or something....
but in real life when you talk like that (or god forbid acted on some of that stuff!) you'd be seen as crazy or desperate or inappropriate, etc.?
Why can we listen to these things as art, but we can't *live* them? Are we in denial?

guess i didn't make the question clear enough. the lyrics i quoted... i just kind of made them up. i didn't mean that literally i think i'm nothing right now, or that i don't love myself (though to be honest, i am feeling pretty sad & weak about his pulling away). i'm just thinking very generally:
why are lyrics *in music* and art... and some lines in movies... so very loved by people -- when in real life (in North American society, at least), these same sentiments would be considered extreme, inappropriate, strange, or even psychologically disturbed?

well, thanks for the kind answers... i guess i'm really just having trouble phrasing this question in an understandable manner. :p what im trying to ask is, why does SOCIETY (NOT, say, an individual person we're in love with) view this type of feeling or behavior as extreme? or maybe it doesn't? lol, now I'M confused. :D
i'm really just viewing this as a general odd thing i've noticed. it seems we're not on the same page in the *practice* of passion as we are in the theory of it. (as evidenced by our love of passionate expression in art.)

in order to love,,,,, to give love, you must first love and respect yourself,,,,,
love is not about desperation, its not about being needy ,its not about someone else "making you something", or bringing you happiness
love can of course, fulfill needs, lift you up, cause happiness,
but you must be whole yourself first,,,,,,,
i have no idea why our songs still reflect those ideas

Because what they are and what they represent are two different things. The lyrics are only symbols to express the vast necessity of the one being loved (assuming it's a love song). It is just a symbol that INVOKES the sensations of love.
In the lyric "I was nothing before I met you" the lyric creates a difference between the value that the singer has for himself alone and the value the singer has now with his lover, the discrepancy between how it was and how it is now has been resolved and he am happier for it.
Our problem as a society is that we are delusional. We look at the words too much, twist them and make them dance. How often has a lawyer or politician done this...in the last second (heh)? Phrases like this are literal, sure, but are they true? No, or rarely. It's all done to invoke an emotion in you, to play with language to convey the meaning of the song with feeling.
No wonder there are so many confused people in he world, eh? We forget that language is a tool meant to render meaning. The words themselves shouldn't be looked at as literally as we often do.
I'll close with an old story I heard about a Chinese spiritual master who, every day, took a student with him to watch the sunset. One sunset a particular student with the master remarked "How Beautiful". The Chinese master said nothing, but refused to let the student come with him again. When questioned by the other students "Please, master, why won't you like Lau go with you again?" the master replied "When Lau spoke, he was only watching the words".

When you say those words, or act on the sentiment, to the right person... then it will be magical. But the wrong person will make us feel needy, desperate, crazy, etc. when we express those things.
I'm sorry you're hurting, Sweetie. Heartaches cause pain like nothing else on earth. But it will get better... I promise. Keep smiling.

Is it that familiarity breads contempt as absurd as it sounds.
You listen to the song over and over till it becomes just sound.
I guess thats why musicians are still in business. It's never enough.

musicians in general (and especially rock stars) have an
extremely distorted view of the world, and reality in general.
i think most people, in the course of their daily lives at least,
know better than to take the poetic-view of love (or anything
else) seriously. common-sense alone tends to trump all such
silly romantic nonsense, and n-i-p-i-t in the bud before it gets
out of hand.

i once quoted a movie directly (eternal sunshine of the spotless mind) and won my man over.
these sayings work, but only if the person who hears them is deep enough to comprehened the meaning.
A twelve year old won't get it, but a soul mate will.
Understand?
Its really just an issue of audience awareness.

you may "feel" that way. but, what good does it do you. after a little while you have to "get over it"
denial,,, not sure, maybe
after all no one really wants to admit to being beaten down over a relationship gone bad.
