vibrations, sound is a wave in the air. if it's high enough/ vibrates fast enough it will break the glass. This is due to the structure of the glass molecules but i can't elaborate on that.

If you take a finger and tap the glass to make it chime, and then sing that exact note at a high enough volume the frequencies will match. This causes vibrations to set up and break the glass. The only time I can find that it has happened with an unamplified voice was shown on Mythbusters.

the high pitched noise made by the vocal cords exert a powerful screech which makes the glass shatter.

with things that vibrate in the same frequency

it's not about how long they hold the note...it's about the frequency and intensity of the note they're singing.
