How does reciprocity serve one's professional ability?

This question is the topic of a paper I have due tomorrow. I already wrote the paper, but I am supposed to come up with a discussion question about reciprocity at the end, and I simply can't come up with anything. Help please!

Another term for this is networking. The whole point it to assist someone with the understanding that later on they may help you.
Say you get a great internship with a company and they tell you that they have a spot for one more student. You know someone who would do well in the job. This person may not be a friend, but simply someone you know who has the qualifications the new boss wants. You pass along the name and the student gets the job.
You have done two people favors, the student and the boss. The boss will see this as an intern being resourceful and one who attempts to fulfill a request. The student will see this as extreme generousity, and if he is smart, will look for an opportunity to return the favor.
Or say you are in sales and a client asks you for a product your company doesn't offer. You do some research and give your client a referral for a place to get that product. You cement your relationship with the client who becomes convinced that you really have his best interests at heart.
