Before 1980, there was no distinct line with conservatives being Republican and liberals being Democrat. There were quite a few liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. In 1960, Nixon and JFK were running against each other and had very similar positions on most issues.
The Republicans were the party that freed the slaves, which was a very progressive thing to do at the time. Also, in California in the early 20th century, the Republicans were behind the movement to reform government with referendums, recalls, and other reforms, to loosen the grip that Big Railroad had on the government and give more power to the people.
It wasn't until Ronald Reagan emerged in national politics that Republicans aligned with conservative Christian values, and Democrats likewise shifted to the left.

no i'm sorry you have it backwards. the republicans used to be very liberal. the first republicans emerged in europe and they where very liberal, border line socilast actually. they where one of the 1st emerging nationalst political movements in europe. very liberal, left, and radical. they often had secert societys and where arrerested by the powers in control. a little later american republicans emerged. the most famous probably Abe lincolin. they where very liberal and left as well. conservative in it's root means to conserve the way of life. meaning keeping things they way they are. conservatives fear change. they want things to stay the same or be like the good old days. liberal;s are looking to the future for " progress" in socilast terms. meaning liberals want society to be controlled by a government of the people for the people. that ios the anncient battle.
and so just recently republicabns are considered conservative. Nixon reagan, bush and the rest.

Because in 1980 the Republican party received a large injection of Conservative Democrats fleeing the leftist policies of the Carter Administration.
Even though they were 'conservative' from a democratic point of view, they were 'liberal' in the receiving Republican point of view. This split the Republican party into liberal Republican and Conservative Republican, or Neo Con and Paleo Conservative.
