Its OK. It means your a little off the planet, you know like, just a bit odd but its not a bad thing, so not offensive. More of a term of endearment I would say, cos if they didnt like you they'd just say you were mental.

An airhead, or one who is out of touch or geeky, is sometimes pejoratively called a "space cadet."

That you're thoughts are in outer space, and that you can't think coherently. It's kind of derogatory, and I don't recall ever saying that to someone, although I might have said that about someone. I think it was commonly used to describe someone that did a few too many drugs.

Well, I guess "distracted" would work. Sometimes it has a harsher meaning... like they think you're a bit dumb.

Normally though, they don't think you're thinking well or clearly or not paying attention. You're "spacey."
