As others have said, it's usually very hot and humid in August, except in Hokkaido. Also, we just had an unusually warm winter which makes me wonder if we're going to have some crazy weather in summer - either extraordinarily hot (which would be intolerable) or unusually cool (nice for travelling). I recommend rescheduling if possible.

Whether it's "a good time to go" is going to be up to the individual. However, the weather is generally hot and humid in August in most of Japan (with the exception of perhaps Hokkaido). This year mid-August also corresponds to Obon, which is a peak travel season in Japan, and that will drive up air travel prices as well.
So if you're OK with relatively high travel costs, and hot and humid weather, then it's a good time to go. :) One thing you can do in August is climb Mount Fuji, as it is open climbing season during the summer months.

I'm Japanese living in the states.
Well, I really hate to go back to Japan especially in August because it's too muggy! But if you are going to Hokkaido, it will probably be ok. The average temperature there in summer is around 77F. But if you are going to Tokyo, it will be really bad. The temperature will probably be around 95F and it's going to be really really muggy.
The good time to go there is either spring or fall. So if I were you, I would reschedule the plan.

in northern japan it will still be really hot and humid, but it should be nice in southern japan - such as tokyo or kyoto. definately try to see a fireworks festival!! it would be a great time to climb mt fuji if you wanted to, otherwise it'll be beautiful weather for outdoor activities (and photos!)

August is unbearably hot!! I have lived here for 3 years and no, the locals don't think it is all that hot, but to us expats (gaijins!) it is too hot to enjoy being outdoors.

Oh yes it's perfect time to go there. It is hot but not too hot in Tokyo. Just like 30 degree maximum.
What I definitely recommend is "hanabi taikai" which means fire works festival. It's amazing. I have seen other countries fire works but Japanese fire works is very different. Also "yomise or yatai" which is like temporary booth for sailing many Japanese cultural foods, and stuffs. It's so much fun! You have to go for it for sure.
