Actually, rule of thumb is that you can match to either pants or shoes. But for formal attire I always think it looks best to match both shoes and socks to the pants.Eg -black pants=black shoes,black socks.

If you are wearing a pastel outfit
and light shoes, match your shoes, or your tie. If you are wearing a black tux, or suit match your pants. (With suits and ties many combos work. Some match their ties or shirts with their socks depending upon the color!)

Formal would mean Black, so black, black,and black would be the way to go.Always try to match the pants when it comes to the socks....

lets just say you wouldnt wear white socks with black pants and black shoes

if possible try to match all 3

and dont wear a black belt with brown shoes and vice versa

If you are wearing formal wear, it is black socks. I am a traditionalist, so, for me, it would be a black tuxedo (with matching pants and jacket), a white dinner jacket with black pants, a black tail coat with black pants, or a gray morning coat with striped pants. All with black socks.

I don't wear colored tuxedos.

your shoes no ones gonna see them anyways though socks are no big its the shirt and tie girls look at not ur socks

I'd say either or. Whatever flots your boat.
If you like it matching pants, then go ahead!
If you want it to match your shoes, then there you go =)

Not all the time. You usually match it to your shoes. If you have kakis on and black shoes, then wear black socks not kaki.
