Interesting that you should ask. Because the latest theory about why they fly toward lights is that they think it is the Moon. At night, only a few thousand years ago, the Moon was the only source of bright light at night, and it is thought that insects may have adapted to use it as a beacon to fly straight. So, in fact, when they are flying at lights, they are trying to fly at the Moon.

The moon is not so near the earth. There is no oxygen on the moon. So even if they tried to get there they wouldnt happen also they are small organisms and dont have that much energy to fly that far.

They don't have enough energy to make high enough to even come in contact with a cloud! and the air is really thin higher up so nothing much can breathe up there. And thing burn up in the ozone layer. Its the same as why you will never find bugs on the top of Mount Everest.

I think that some of them tried to fly to the moon to escape their predators. But when they reached a level in the atmosphere they couldn't breathe and fell to Earth and became victims of spiders and ants, not to mention the sole of a shoe.
