My husband has made plans to take me out for dinner on my birthday, even though 15 years of marriage should tell him that I hate restaurants. He insists on using a brand of laundry detergent that I hate because it smells bad and makes me itch. My kids are being the same way. They argue with everything I say, and it really feels like my opinions don't matter to my family at all. How can I get them to let me have a few things my way?

Stop using the laundry detergent he buys, and start buying your own and only wash your clothes in it. Marriage is 50/50, so he should compromise about these things. Next year before your birthday just tell him you would like a quite night at home with just him, make it seem you want to be with just him. Stoke his ego about that. As far as your children start taking control over the household again. When they start in let them know you will ground or take something they like away and mean it, just don't use words. We can't be used as a doormat unless we allow it. It seems you have been a doormat to your family for years, stop and let them know you want the respect you deserve and if you don't get it, then stop doing anything for them. As far as the husband the same. He should after 15 years know these things about what makes you itch and choose something that doesn't do that to you. If that doesn't work then take a few days away from them to let them see just how much you do for them.

When you get the answer to this one, please let us all know. I am lucky to the fact that my husband is pretty understanding and values my opinions, but my 15 year old son, well that is a totally different story. And if you have young children, I am sorry but it just gets worse. Sorry to the the barer of the news. Good Luck

you do the shopping for your own laundry soap.

have you ever heard of family night? taker the little monsters, sit them down at the table and have a nice dinner. while your at it, take away the video games, cell phones, and tv for the night. you may not get respect, but you will be making their lives a living hell one night a week.

As a husband I can honestly say, THIS IS NAGGING. All wives hate the "C" word too. You know, COMPROMISE.
