This was explained a bit in the beginning, and the prequel series of comics that came out before the movie.

Astronomers found something around where Krypton should be, and it was possible that there could be life there. Superman has to know for sure, so he flies off and ends up being away in space for 5 years.

This was done so that this movie could be tied into a vague continuity to the previous movies, so that a new origin movie was not needed.

There was a rumor at one point the original idea for this was that Lex Luthor gave the information to the media so that Superman would leave Earth, and Lex would end up getting out of Jail. Not sure they actually used that reason in the movie though.

There was also talk at one point they would show more of this in the beginning, but that ended up being cut out, and the opening where you are flying through space is actually Superman's ship flying back towards Earth from the area Krypton would have been.

some astronomers had found what they thought might be the remnants of superman's home planet krypton. he had to leave to check it out, but it was so far that it took him several years to fly there and back.
