USA - National Federation of State High School Associations
(2005-06 stats)

BASKETBALL
Male - 546,335
Female - 452,929
TOTAL - 999,264

HOCKEY (ICE)
Male - 36,263
Female - 7,152
TOTAL - 43,415

HOCKEY (FIELD)
Male - 716
Female - 62,299
TOTAL - 63,015

Even if you combine the two versions of hockey, basketball still had about 900,000 more participants last year. I don't think the stats would have changed that drastically in a year.

THE VERDICT:
BASKETBALL.

Depends. In some places it is hockey, and in other places it is basketball. Overall, in North America anyway, basketball is more popular, if only because it is easier and cheaper to play. But there are many places, especially in Canada and some northern regions of America, where hockey is much more popular than basketball.

Basketball. Very few prime tuition play hockey anymore except it is a tuition within the North East. Almost each and every tuition within the nation it doesn't matter what measurement performs basketball. It's additionally alot extra pricey for a prime tuition to subject a hockey workforce.

Depends on your location, down here in NC, we only have roller hockey 'club', the school won't recognive it as a team. But I know up north hockey is more popular by far.

Basketball. Most high school kids don't have enough skill to play hockey. And hard to get enough ice time to improve skills.

Basketball, it's a lot cheaper to play, it's offered in almost every school, you can play it in almost any climate, and it communicates a lot better to urban youth. Although, we all know hockey is a much cooler (no pun intended) sport. :P I just wish more people though this as well.

um...where? if you live where there is snow, than it will be hockey, more likely. but if you live say in Cali like i do, finding hockey in high school is like death. it is depressing really, going from all hockey to basketball. and if they do have hockey it is not ice. i am big on ice. what is the point if there is no ice?!?
but, in my book, i prefer hockey.
