If you want to be a gamer, there are several things to consider. First, do you want to be a consol gamer or a PC gamer. Consol games are typically more limited in scope, simply because of the limitations on your control surface. However, they make very nice shooters. PC games tend to be cheaper (especially when you look at the price drop in the first 6 months compared to consol games) than consol games. Generally, complex simulations of reality and strategy games are usually better off on a PC (Civilization or X-Com, for example). Another thing to consider is graphics quality. Consols sort of standardize graphics, due to the uniform hardware. With a PC you are limited to what you put in your platform, but if you have the cash (1200 will get you a pretty up-to-date gaming rig) you will have superior quality. Keep in mind that even the day after an X-Box 360 was released, most players were still locked into the resolution of their TV sets (in general, bad). Even the most basic CRT monitor on a PC is generally going to have a clearer picture than a television set.

If you want to get a team going, I suggest a shooter of some sort. CS is a very good game for that (PC), and one of the Halo games is the undisputed champion for at least the X-Box. Another option would be something like Starcraft. While Starcraft was released for consols as well, I am unsure of the support for onlline play. Certainly the interface for an RTS such as Starcraft is vastly superior on a PC.

2) Availability of Games
3) Genre
4) Interests

Try some online bowman games. Champion.
Beat boom shine online.
Be able to beat legend of zelda, twilight princess.
Beat 2 lvl 9's and 1 lvl 1 on ssbm
Preorder spore for some new game experiences.
Beat a game once, then beat it again, but faster.
Play the originals, like doom.
Play a game without looking at the controller.
Beat a game with minimal help. Like in a team game like Marvel ultimate alliance, only use one character unless need 2 or more.
Beat Master hand with pichu on ssbm
Beat Very hard with one life.

Work your way up on cruel melee, untill you beat them all
