Pompeii is an Italian City Not an Island. They Speak Italian. I have been to Pompeii (New and Old). They Speak Italian.

A language resembling Latin. Julius Caesar, who wrote his Gallic Wars about 50BC, wrote in Latin, but for him that was a learned language. That's why children learning Latin translate Caesar. It's a beginners' Latin. About AD 10, Vergil wrote "The Aeneid" and other poems in Latin, but he was not from Rome. He was born and grew up in Mantua. For him also, Latin was a second language. That is why there was a Golden Age in Latin literature, but nothing great afterwards.
