I find it very strange that a reasonable question is often treated with total lack of interest or even flippancy.
Hitler was a Roman Catholic boy who served as an altar boy in the church. He served in the German army in WW1 and had extreme politcal ambitions which led his arrest and time in jail. It is there that he wrote Mein Kamp (my struggle).
Germany did indeed have a low self-image at that time and unemployment was high. Hitler gave them HOPE and regenerated their SELF PRIDE, promising them prosperity and life in a PURE GERMAN society, free from Jewsih influence (jews had control of finances and owned most industries etc).
Unfortunately his ambition became a megalamania (insane desire) and it mushroomed into a despotic, hate=filled regime which in the end caused his downfall.
As far as the use of the word "evil", it is all a matter of which side you are on, doesn't it.?
According to the Bible for example, killing somewhat is EVIL
So Pres Bush as just ordered another 14000 ment go over to Iraq and KILL those who are disrupting law and order.
SO is that EVIL? Last year 120 people were killed by lethal injection in Texas. IS THAT EVIL?
Some people even say that having an abortion is EVIL. Others call it birth control. So do you want to change your question?

Read Mein Kampf
In Mein Kampf, Hitler makes a biographical account of his life and also describes plans for German-allied countries to rule Europe, along a racist worldview of white supremacy with Aryans as the master race at the top, and Jews at the bottom: Germany would re-arm and join United Kingdom and Italy as allies to defeat France and Eastern Europe, eventually overthrowing the Soviet Union to conquer the so-called "twin evils" of Communism and Judaism, giving Germany Lebensraum (living-space) to the east. He said his aim was to eradicate both from the face of the earth.
Some famous quotes from the book include:
* The great masses of the people will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one.
* Sooner will a camel pass through a needle's eye than a great man be 'discovered' by an election.
* The broad masses of a population are more amenable to the appeal of rhetoric than to any other force.
* Never forget that the most sacred right on this earth is man's right to have the earth to till with his own hands, the most sacred sacrifice the blood that a man sheds for this earth.
* Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.
* Any alliance whose purpose is not the intention to wage war is senseless and useless.
What make Hitler so evil is the fact that he refashioned Germany to become an aggressive power dedicated to war solely to the acknowledged goal of obliterating from the face of the earth all his "enemies" for his gain. In simple terms, might makes me right. Lying, cheating and stealing are accepted as is both rape and killing. As the bible would indicate, these are values that are usually associated with the devil thus evil.

Adolf Hitler was "evil" because he blamed other people instead of trying to take responsibility. He rose to power during the Depression by blaming the Jews for the economic situation. And then, rather than acknowledge the real reasons for all the poverty, he re-armed Germany, persecuted and killed Jews, and started WW2... all because he didn't want to take responsibility...

Hitler was brain damaged. Kind of like 'Rainman' was retarted. He was an incredible public speaker, knew just what buttons to push, a great leader. But his brain damaged side was really out there. His mother was Jewish (her name was Shicklegruber). The bible says that when the last Jew dies, it will be the end of the world. This is where his trouble starts. He thought if he could eliminate all the Jews in the world, he would be the last Jew. That would mean he would hold the the end of the world in his own hands.
He thought of Jews less than dogs. He was really really sick - thought nothing of killing people for his own gain. He lived by the philosophy that humans need to be aggressive killers.
Here's a few of his personal beliefs;
All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach.

By the skillful and sustained use of propaganda, one can make a people see even heaven as hell or an extremely wretched life as paradise.
Chamberlain seemed such a nice old gentleman that I thought I would give him my autograph.
Demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage, assassination. This is the war of the future.
Generals think war should be waged like the tourneys of the Middle Ages. I have no use for knights; I need revolutionaries.
Great liars are also great magicians.
Hate is more lasting than dislike.
He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future.
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think.
How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.
Humanitarianism is the expression of stupidity and cowardice.
I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator.

I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few.

It is always more difficult to fight against faith than against knowledge.
It is not truth that matters, but victory.

Strength lies not in defence but in attack.
Success is the sole earthly judge of right and wrong.
The art of leadership... consists in consolidating the attention of the people against a single adversary and taking care that nothing will split up that attention.

Hitler wasn't "evil". He was a leader who united the German people after WWI, and brought them out of their Great Depression. He did some terrible things that were cruel, unjust, and abominable, yes, but he wasn't evil. Some say that his doctor experimented with his medication. this medication essentially fried his brain...literally.
