A mathematician's will stated that his wife should get one-third of his estate, his son one-fifth, his older daughter one-sixth, and his younger daughter $9,000. Who received more, his older daughter or his younger daughter?

1/3 + 1/5 + 1/6 =
10/30 + 6/30 + 5/30 =
21/30

so the younger daughter gets 9/30

since 9/30 of estate is $9,000, the whole estate must be $30,000

the older daughter gets 1/6th - $5,000 - less than the younger daughter :(

Assuming that the people mentioned are all the people named in his will, his younger daughter would receive whatever is left after distributing (1/3 + 1/5 + 1/6) of his estate. 1/3 + 1/5 + 1/6 = 10/30 + 6/30 + 5/30 = 21/30 = 7/10 of the estate, so the remainder is 3/10, which is greater than 1/6, so the younger daughter received more. As an aside, this implies that the mathematician's entire estate is 10/3 of $9,000, or only $30,000, so this is hardly a wealthy mathematician.

1/3+1/5+1/6 = 10/30+6/30+5/30=21/30
9000 is 9/30 of estate
estate = 30000

older got 30000/6 = 5000

younger wins

e = estate
w = wife
s = son
d = daughter
yd = younger daughter
w = 1/3e
s = 1/5e
d = 1/6e
yd = 9000
e = w + s + d + yd
e = (1/3e)+(1/5e) + (1/6e) + 9000
e = 0.7e + 9000
0.3e = 9000
e = 30000
d = (1/6)(30000)
= 5000.
his younger daughter received more

That is a mathmatically impossible question, you must know the amount he has to divide amongst the children.

It doesn't state that his younger daughter is getting the remainder of the estate, so its impossible to figure out.
