do i have to loosen the lever first?
if so how would i go about doing so as the heatsink and fan are attached to the cpu

I just don't know how you were able to take out the processor w/ the HSF still attached. That could mean you also took out the retention bracket (or probably including the socket). Or maybe you are using a different HSF that got rid of the retention bracket.

I suggest you test your processor first in another PC. If it is still ok, something might have been damaged in your motherboard's socket.

The lever should come up; they typically have a small notch in the socket to allow the lever to "snap" into place, and keep it secure. Make sure you're pulling on the correct end, but they usually aren't too difficult to get up.

Normally, you'd remove the fan/heatsink in order to get to the lever in the first place; if you simply pried the whole thing out without moving that lever in the first place, hopefully the processor and socket weren't damaged in the process.

You shouldn't otherwise need to loosen it - assuming yours looks like this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_754 - you'd just gently pry up the end of the lever. In this picture, the end you're lifting is in the bottom-right corner of the picture shown at that link.

Good luck!

The heatsink and fan and CPU are all separate components. The CPU has some gunk (electrostatic jelly) underneath it so don't wipe that off.

You may need to use a surprising amount of force to lock the spring lever back into place.

You should not have released the lever as you only do that if you are going to remove the actual CPU.

i think you might have taken it out incorrectly, as in order to take it out properly, you're supposed to lift the lever, remove the heatsink, etc., then clean (although i've never heard of people cleaning the insides of thier comp). Try loosening the leaver, removing the heatsink, etc. If all else fails, post yahoo answers again or call the geek squad (i hate em, their expensive, yet they know what to do).

try using compressed air to clean. it pretty much owns evrything,
