i didn't get my patch picked up from the pharmacy for about a week after i should have and we used an old condom and vcf we had from before as back-up, which afterwards, when i was picking up the trash, noticed that they were both expired. are the exp date just to make us buy more or are they still good if wrappers are not open and they were stored properly?

Take heed to the expiration dates. You are at an increased risk of becoming pregnant or becoming exposed to sexually transmitted diseases when you use expired contraceptives such as condoms, and or when you do not take contraceptive medications, like the patch or birth control pills, as prescribed.

Latex does break down, it does not matter if they are in the wrapper or not. For peace of mind, just buy a new pack.

You should throw them out since they will not be as effective as they would be if they weren't expired. Your risk is much higher after they expire.
