I know this might sound strange but i picked up five cichlids from a friend and he told me they were from the same mother. If they grow up and there are males and females in the batch of five then would they do the german thing and mate or do the same family of fish not go into that?

The german thing??? Not sure I understand THAT part but...fish don't even know who their parents are..no less brothers and sisters in possible fry batches of 500!
If a pair matches up, they'll mate. With their brother, sister, mom, grandfather...even outside their little cichlid race! Lots of the African "assorteds" you see in the LFS are just crossbred cichlids. The blood parrot, flowerhorn, jellybean, etc are all other forms of crossbreeds.

They probably would, if you have the the right environment. Fish don't give a care in the world about inbreeding*! As long as there is a boy and girl, they will mate. In fact, most breeders get the best colorations in fish by inbreeding.

*inbreeing is "doin' the german thang" within the same family.

It's all the same with fish, they don't have 'families'. So this 'fish incest' is actually just normal breeding.

If there's a male and a female, they'll mate - related or not.
