American forces used an "island-hopping" campaign, capturing major strategic islands in the Pacific, such as those that would base aircraft, while bypassing less important ones. This was accomplished using mostly naval aircraft based on carriers to combat Japanese ships and numerous amphibious landings. They would do this until they reached close enough to bring the war to mainland Japan and hopefully force their surrender. The next target after North Africa was Sicily and Italy. I don't know the last one.

in the pacific the us forces sank every japanese ship they could find, then by passed many japanese island garnisons- these were cut off from supplies and rendered powerless

After Africa the next target was Italy (Sicily first, then the mainland) this forced the Germans to protect southern France and Yugoslavia- while the main attack went through Normandy
