This is a survey I decided to conduct when my music instructor was wondering which instrument was harder. Tell why and tell which instrument you favor the most.

Personally, I favor the violin(I take lessons and have played it for a while) because I like the sound of it and I find it harder. This is because the violin consists of two parts, the violin itself and the bow, requiring two different operations, making it harder. Thank you for taking the survey.

I have plaied both the violin and the flute for several years, and beg to differ.
When playing the violin, you hold it securley under your chin, and do not really have to worry about it wobbling. The fingerings are also very logical- once you know what they are, you can play them. While bowing does require some techinique, it flows very rytymically. What you do is what you get. The flute, however requires strong breath in addition to arm stamina, and don't think that it's not difficult to hold the flute inbetween your thumb and forefinger while flapping around the rest of the fingers. Unlike violinists, floutists are requrired to shift the weight of the instrument according to the note that they are currently playing. Breathing also can be a difficult process, as it requires a lot of air to hold out the long, high notes floutists are often required to play. I know a girl who fainted on stage when she was first starting.
When playing flute, the pitch of the note is also dependent on the speed of air blown into the instrument, in combonation with the angle of the mouthpiece, and if any holes are even the slightest bit open, the note changes dramatically.
Honest to god, there just are many more factors that a floutist must become accustomed to performing fluently. Violin is considerably easier, at least for me.
Flute also has a match-able number of styles in which technique must be altered. (Jazz, classical, patriotic to violin's classical, fiddle, contemporary)

The violin is much harder than the flute. The violin deals with intonation issues. If the person's finger is not on the right spot on the violin, the note is not correct. Violinist continue to struggle with intonation issues throughout their careers. Also, playing a violin requires a person to work on a lot of difficult technique, from holding the violin correctly, to having the correct bow hold, to making sure your fingers are correctly placed on the violin. The violin is also held in an extremely awkward position on the body. It creates unnatural angles of the body. Violins also are harder to keep in tact, maintain, and make. A violin is normally handmade and carved from wood, while the flute is metal. Wood instruments tend to chip. Since many are hand made, they tend to be expensive and should be checked every six months to a year by a maker. The bows of a violin need rosin and the hair of the bow should be replaced every six months to a year depending on the violinists style of bowing.

I have been playing the violin for 17 years and I think it's pretty easy, if you know what you're doing. I've never played the flute or any other brass/woodwind instrument. I can imagine the flute would be a little harder because the simple fact that you have to blow into it and have the right fingerings...but it all depends on the person playing.

For me, the violin is more difficult to learn how to play than the flute because there are more styles of the violin to learn, from classical violin to country fiddle, than there is for the flute.
