I don't see any significance of it at all. If you read The Bible you know that they were Jewish and if you look at Jewish people, they are of darker skin and hair, so a better question may be, why aren't all the characters played by African Americans or Jewish people? In order to be more realistic.

The bible states that Jesus is a man of dark skin. I don't think there were any white people around in that area at the time, so why wouldn't Jesus have been dark skinned? All I know is God is NOT a woman because he created man out of his own image and created woman out of man...lol But the REAL REASON I know God is not a woman OR a man, is because He is God! By arguing weither or not he was man or woman we degrade God by trying to put ourselves on the same level as God. I'm not on that level... I'm fine being the human and letting God be God. :-)

They chose the best singer and actor to do the part. And with "JC Superstar" the tradition on stage was to use all kinds of multicultural actors for some of the different parts. Talent's talent - why should someone's color make a difference?

Cuz Jesus was Middle Eastern...
There were many black men and women in that area in that time.
Lots and lots of them... most were sadly slaves or captives forced to join the military.
But some just chose to settle there ...
