I am 25 and I will face the same thing you will, probably. I don't know if there is anything anyone can do. Can't you see this topic is being ignored right now because it's not really an issue yet? It won't be a serious issue until Americans who are retiring don't get their monthly checks in the mail. By then, it would be too late. I agree, things need to be fixed now or else it's too late. See, all our money was going to people who were not even citizens of the US and people who never even paid taxes. The government have practically used all the social security people are paying into on people who really shouldn't get it. Also, there are more old people who are retiring than people who are actually working. There is not a balance anymore. There are too many people who are umemployed too, which means government (our tax dallors) money is paying them an income and they are not working, making money to pay into social security. This is definitely a serious issue because when we pay into social security when we are working, that means when we reach retiring age the money needs to go to us, who have paid into it, but that may not be true. So......at this point, then stop taking money out of our paychecks and let us invest the money into a retirement of our choice or our own. But you know that isn't going to happen because what is the government going to do then? They have already lost billions of dallors. Why were they giving money to people who weren't citizens to begin with? Why are they allowing all these people who can work and not the age of 65 live off the tax payers money?

Well for starters Soc Sec was a great idea and former presidents are probably rolling in their graves about what has happened to it.
People don't realize how much money would and should be there if it was left alone the way it was intended but because there was a little money sitting there, money hungry presidents began to run up big budget deficits and had to cover them so they nipped a little here and there, then of course it was robbed to pay for wars, that was not their money to use and congress just voted, boom, the money was taken, did you consent to your money used for a war? Probably not, I sure didn't.
It really angers me and I think someone should sit down and figure back in time to when it was first originated, how many people paid in, what they paid, what everyone along the way paid into it, and what should be there and isn't, and the govt should put it back but how can we when other countries own us due to the govt's borrowing for the war? There wouldn't be any money in that fund it people weren't working today and paying into it and there is no real reason other than pilfering it out that the money isn't there. All the presidents and congress that voted to use that money that was not theirs should be brought up on charges for stealing it.
All we can do now is nothing because nobody will band together to do anything, it's sad but if someone brings it up, they are probably blown off and like everything else in America, told to suck it up and we all have to make do with budget cuts, blah blah blah the standard old line that keeps separating the rich and the poor, the poor make less and make do and get poorer while the rich don't suffer at all and continute to draw their fat salaries.

I think when it was formed, social security was a terrific idea: during The Depression, there were more younger people working than older people who were retirement age. There was no way then that they could have imagined that the older people would outnumber the workers one day (life expectancy was shorter then and birth control was limited).
Given that you are only 19 years old, you have a lot of time to try to fix the situation before you retire. Do not wait for others to take care of you--the older people are going to take care of themselves (note: when it comes time to fund local schools, the local Leisure Worlds often vote against such bonds because it is not in their own best interest). If you're concerned about it, do something to change things now.
Take care.

Why can no longer we carry yet another constitutional convention and replace/advance the rfile, as Jefferson a minimum of would choose us to do? Why can no longer we institute a flat tax, and end the class wars? Why can no longer we come across tips on a thank you to spend tax money on effects that final our lifetimes, and spend the the rest money on noble motives that have been ignored? Why can no longer we build synthetic wombs, and have fetuses bumped off alive from their non-wanting mothers and stored alive till they completely strengthen and can be accompanied by making use of couples or a Peace Corps form of enterprise? Why can no longer we've weapons with set off locks that merely respond to the only proprietor's DNA or different organic and organic identity to launch, and then music down and injury all weapons that don't function this mechanism? Why can no longer we arise with a clean variety of marriage wherein, for 2 gay adult men to wed, they had the two be required to marry a lesbian couple who additionally choose to wed one yet another, and least attempt to maintain relatives dynamics? (This 2-marriages-in-one association looks severe, despite if it is the only available compromise i'm able to ascertain for the period of this project.) Why can no longer we strengthen a Peace Corps form of enterprise for the deprived? Why can no longer we permit the folk regulate the economic equipment? There must be different recommendations as properly the common ones "conservatives" and "liberals" constantly positioned forth. If we honestly did positioned those recommendations in place, perhaps the perceived gulf between conservatives and liberals would no longer look somewhat so great? this is the beginning up of the hot occasion i'm finding for.

I agree. Our generation is going to get screwed over because there will be nothing left. We're just throwing more money at the government, but that's what Social Security was for anyhow. They government just borrows it until they won't be able to pay it back, ie. when we retire. I think it should be completely optional. If you want to pay for it that's your deal and if you don't you shouldn't have to. Don't we have the "freedom" to decide?

well, i am 52, and have been paying social security since i was 17,,, wow for 35 years lol, and since i am on the younger end of the baby boomers,,,, i dont really expect it to be there for me!
the main problem, it was never meant to pay for itself, stay up to date, back in its beggining, if a person filed,, who maybe worked a few years, if that, under it and paid into it, they could retire and draw a check,,,,,,,, till the end of their life,,,, in fact, i am not sure you had to even of had paid into it back then,,,, so its been behind, running on borrowed money, for ever ,,,, though really, when you think about it, where did all the money go? all of us baby boomers have been paying in for years, not all of us are surviving to claim it,,,,,,

We should work toward "options" upon reaching retirement because social security is not a guarantee.

Congress will pass another bill and reform the system once again after 2025 so it's to my recollection that Social Security will be thin, but it will be there.
