He did it because he was mentally ill. He wasn't believed to be a danger to anyone but himself and had on many occasions refused treatment, but when placed in the wrong environment even a patient under treatment can experience an escalation in their illness. It seems to me that the VT campus must have been the wrong environment for him. There were too many influences that caused him to develop a generalized and illogical anger toward rich people. With nobody left to offer him treatment it was only a matter of time until he acted on it. Had he been in a more controlled environment he still would've been mentally ill, but the likelihood that his condition would take such a drastic turn for the worse would've been much more remote.

He was a paranoid schizophrenic, and delusional. He said that we all were making him miserable for our own enjoyment, and that we had decided to spill his blood, and he was like Jesus Christ. That is what you call "delusions of persecution" and "delusions of grandeur;" classic paranoid ideation of the most malignant kind. This is caused by a brain chemistry disorder. Nobody did it to him.
Unfortunately, especially in Virginia, it is almost impossible to force a mentally ill adult to get treatment or even be detained. He would have had to tell somebody his plan.

He was mentally unbalanced.
After all, the things he experienced in his life were and are experienced by many young people.
They just get on with their life in a more normal manner.
They don't kill innocent people because of it.

He was full of anger that he had no friends, so he wanted to kill himself along with some "friends". He liked to die together, not alone.
