According to the reviews I've read before choosing my own internet security package, the 2 you've named were pretty badly reviewed. Norton seemed to be more problematic than anything else. Mc Affee, better, but still not the best.
To do their test, the magasines implanted viruses, trojans, spywares and so on to PC with different Security packages.
The results: Kaspersky did really well. Bit Diffender came 1st with no infection at all.
But don't forget that things change very quickly, so update your software as often as possible.

Neither, they are both bloatware. Norton has a particularly nasty habit of placing entries all over the registry, and getting rid of it is difficult and takes ages. Mcafee is no better,. They both interfere with what you are doing and frequently open web sites where they try to sell you other things. Nor do they do an entirely satisfactory job of providing protection. If you trawl the Internet you can find many criticisms of both these programs. They are also at the top end of cost.
A far better system is Kaspersky (cheaper and more effective). If you want a free virus and firewall program, use Google or Yahoo to search for open source software, there are some excellent ones.

I use Norton, and I've never had a problem with it! I did download avast. But it could never remove virus', trojans or anything, and a message always came up about something not being available (not to do with Avast directly.) I decided to use the Norton software I'd gotten in the first place, and it got rid of 154 virus ect.

Though saying that, my mum uses AVG and has never had a problem either.

No ones computer is 100% safe, really.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/ On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.

NO SECURITY PACKAGE IS THE BEST BET! WHY?
Well this is because most of these packages have a virus implanted in the software, have you ever reached the end of your subscription? and not renewed it for a day or two?
you will find that your computer always ends up with a virus as soon as your package ends, this is because the software launches a virus so you panic and get the next internet security package. Its all a big CON.
Solution:
Have your hard drive partitioned,
Keep all programs in c: drive and all personal data and files in the partitioned drive d:
If you should end up with a virus for whatever reason, all you need to do is re-install your operating system, ie xp,vista.
this will be on your c: drive so you are not loosing any of your personal data or files which will remain on your partitioned drive.
I have been running without any security package now for 17 months and NEVER had a virus. Seems strange that when i used Norton , it was detecting an attack every week.
If you got the balls, try this out, you wont be dissappointed.

Thanx

to be honest neither they are both a pain to when you try to upload new things and run them.
We have had norton in the past and woudnt go back to it, currently have mcafee and now having problems as we tried to load a dongle tonight for blue tooth on the computer, all ok untill mcafee wont allow it to access - when our subscription with mcafee runs out think we will be lookinf for something else.

Out of the two options, I would say Norton is the best,
all though they are both system hogs and can slow down your computers CPU, ( central processing unit ), I used to have Norton on my computer and found that it worked very well until one day my subscription ran out so I installed Norton Security 2007 and had problems with it, so I removed it form my computer using Norton's removal tool, and since I am a customer of virgin media I downloaded their free PC guard security software which is updated every three hours so that you stay protected and have not had any problems so far,
so the choice is up to you which one to have on your computer, both are good, and both can be very difficult to remove if you don't use their removal tool's, good luck

I once worked in a company with very qualified (some with pHds) and experienced computer programmers.. they used and recommended Kaspersky.

Norton and McAfee probably work to a decent level when paid up but they are extremely annoying in my experence. I use Sophos on my laptop (I get it free from University) and Avast at home (its free).

Avast is apparently the best of the free anti-virus packages.
