As good as and as much as I like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, there were many groups ahead of them that started the "Great Groups" back in the '50's.
My vote goes to The Beach Boys; one of the early pioneers. Others were (some you younger posters never heard of) The Crew Cuts, Four Lads, Four Aces, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Dells, The Platters, The Costers, and about 100 others. I'll go with The Beach Boys. Thanks for reminding me of those I haven't heard in many years. Now I have to get them out and play them.

Hmmm... this is one to think about. Of course the logical and quickest response is The Beatles because of their early contribution to Rock n Roll. However, you can't leave out folks like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones because of their quality AND longevity. Then you have to go to other genres and say "What about the Andrews Sisters" (ok, that was a joke)? Really though, what about Rush? They have grown and changed as they've aged. Neil Peart has got to be the best drummer alive, and they are still playing and touring to sell out crowds.
OK... enough babbling.
My official vote is: Rush
May 1st go out and buy "Snakes and Arrows" and you'll see what I mean.

The Beatles. They might have been influenced by other great artists, but they paved the way for all we know today. And tons of musical artists agree to that.

I would have to agree. The Beatles. They were the true beginning of rock and roll. They influenced SO many of the greastest musicians after them. They influenced music in every genre.

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Without them, rock would probably not exist.

For me, personally, I have to say Slipknot. I know, it may sound absurd to most people, but their music really did get me through high school.
I know that if it wasn't them, it would have been some other band, but it was them, their music allowed me to feel the way I was feeling, and not feel bad about it.
