It's illegal but I'd have a hard time thinking that a police officer would intervene. If you go to a big parking lot when it's empty there is almost no reason the police would care. As long as you're in a safe place and one of your parents are there, I wouldn't worry.

Haha, that's so funny...your question is so coincidental because I'm 14 and I drove for the first time yesterday afternoon! My dad took me up to a local community college, which has a huge open parking lot with no cars... I thought it was pretty fun. I drove around, practiced turning and the turning signals, and stuff like that (in his BMW!).
Technically, it's illegal. But seriously, there's such a low chance that anyone would intervene... unless you actually hit another car, I'd imagine the worst thing that would happen would be you getting a warning. But then again, a TON of people practice driving in open parking lots (as long as they have no cars in them) -- I think the police have come to accept it by now.
So yeah, even though it's "illegal," it's not really WRONG... everyone does it, and there's practically no chance of the cops pulling you over if you're just in a parking lot and not actually on the road.
Have fun! I know I did!! =)

Yes, If you are in an abandoned parking lot, and there are absolutley no cars. It is legal. Speaking from experiece. I was 15 BUT I was driving on the street with my friend, and stupid enough I had no seatbelt. So I got pulled over, got a ticket, and the car was towed. I said I wanted to learn how to drive. I wanted to see how it would be going through traffic lights. And the police officer responded why didnt you just go to a parking lot or somthing. So that would be your best bet. I will never forget that day. lol. Being that you're 14 im not sure, but if its all absolutely safe, then I say you should be fine. Good Luck!!

It's not illegal, but it's not legal either. No cop will stop you unless you're speeding or doing donuts in the parking lot. If that were the case, you have a cool dad.
If the police caught you, they might make you end the driving lesson, but if your dad explained what was going on, the cop would probably understand and let you keep driving.

I don't know if it is illegal or not - but I taught both my kids to drive in our local college parking lot after school was closed for the summer. It is a perfect environment - usually very large and wide - plenty of room for "mistakes" and usually no pedestrians. My kids were each 14 when I first took them out.
I took my grandson to the same place last summer and during spring break....he is 15. His mother plans on taking him there when he is out of school to learn to drive a stick....
So, go for it.
In all the years I did this, no one ever tried to stop me, or said anything at all. Not even the college security or the local police. I guess as long as you are not on a public road, it is OK.
Good Luck....It is more difficult than you think!

I would like to ask you this question.. why not call an ask the police? They can give you a lot better answer than you will get here.. I think it is legal for your father to allow you to learn to drive so long as it is on private property.. call the police and get the true answer..

It is only illegal if you get caught. But technically, it is illegal, both of you would do some serious jail time. They dont play around anymore, not really. They maybe raising the age of licensed drivers pretty soon though, maybe you can get grandfathered in by starting the at home driving school with your parents as your teachers. I think you could start it at your age right now, but you wouldnt get a permit until you reached 15, driving is overrated though.

It is illegal for anyone without a drivers license or permit to operate a motorvehicle on any public highway. That being said there is no law prohibiting the operation of a motorvehicle on private property such as a parking lot. So that being said as long as you are on private property (with permission hopefully) you should be fine.

In the state I live in you MUST be at least 15 years of age and not one day younger and you MUST have a learners permit. IF you get caught (again in the state I live in) the state takes away your ability to get a license until you turn 18.
