from 2 GB Windows 98 to a 4 GB Windows Me hard drive and am having resolution problems on display. I have tryed to change the adapter, but the system insists on using only the S3 adapter. Can't get it to 800 X 600 without it showing "4" images in line. Got a solution?

The hard drive contains the drivers(software) that runs all your accesories. You will have to go to Compaq's website and look for downloads and support for your model of computer. Download and install all the latest drivers the have for your specific model. ONE of them should be for the mainboard chipset which will allow you to change resolution and color quality. (you may also need to get drivers for your particular videocard)

You don't have the right S3 video adapter drivers on the new drive. You could put the old drive back in as a slave and use it as a driver source. You need to go into bios to enable PCI video somehow if you want to use a new adapter.
I'm not sure what kind of halfwit would call ME a resource hog and then recommend 2000 or XP, which both use 4 times as many resources.

One thing would be to get rid of ME! It is beetle-slow and takes up incredible memory and drive space. Try to find someone you can at least get a disc of 2000 with service pack 4. That works with small hard drives.
I liked 98 much better than ME. You will just keep having grief with ME, and it's way outdated.
It's hard to find drivers that will work with it.
I had the same problem with the adapter. Do a fresh format with 2K or XP.

Go to the device manager and delete the S3 display adaptor. Let windows detect your video card. Be prepared to have the Windows distribution on hand.
You might want to download the latest video card drivers for your card first.

Did you change your monitor? i.e. is it an old VGA monitor?
