alliteration is the poetic technique of putting together ("juxtaposing") words with similar initial sounds. it is the counterpoint to rhyme, which is the juxtaposition of words with similar ending sounds.
the example i always think of is the crosby, stills & nash song "helplessly hoping"
"helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers nearby
awaiting a word
grasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit
he runs wishing he could fly
heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams ..."
i can't remember the whole song, but you should get the idea.
from time to time, i compose haiku, and i tend to prefer them if they are alliterative.
this one is to my ex-wife:
beloved, betrothed
but banal! badly betrayed!
begone bovine bit**!
