HPs tend to mess up if they're not installed exactly right. Unplug the printer's USB cable and use add/remove programs to uninstall the printer drivers. Then follow the instructions exactly to reinstall the printer. If you plug it in at the wrong time during install it will mess up again.

Do you mean that Windows is having trouble automatically installing a driver for your printer? If so, you should point the installer to the CD that came with your printer rather than letting it try to find the driver automatically.
