In about 4.5-billion years. It will first swell into a red giant star, throw off much of its mass, and then shrink down to a white dwarf star, about the size of present-day Earth. Hopefully humanity will have survived long enough before then to develop interstellar space travel and moved outward to some other hospitable world.

At the current rate of the Hydrogen loss our sun is expected to nova in 4.5-5 Billion years. Which isn't long if you consider it took us 4.57 Billions years to just post and answer this question. That being said our species (or descendants) have 2 choices. Either we evolve, adapt and leave our solar system or we become extinct.
Keep in mind between now and then the odds are that the earth would be hit by 4-5 asteroids (seperate events roughly 1 every billion years) that would eradicate most of the life on this planet not to mention a dozen cycles of the earth freezing and warming up. That being said you can see how we as a species have bigger problems than our Sun going super nova. With this in mind you can see how fragile our culture, technology, and science really is. The odds are very high that we will be forgotten and all of our technology, art, and science lost.

The sun is roughly half way through it's hydrogen burning (main sequence) life stage. It is approximately 4.5 billion years old, and will become a red giant in another 4.5 billion years (approx).
Just for bonus info, when the sun becomes a red giant it will swell significantly. It will get so large that it will swallow the 3 innermost planet of the solar system (Earth is planet number 3).

A few billion years down the road is the life expectancy of the sun. By then, if we still exist, we would have learned how to travel through time and space easily and who knows where we'll be in the universe. HOpefully, in peace.

it is basically no longer the backside photograph voltaic maximum on checklist. yet in spite of if it exchange into this would not advise something besides of path, because of the fact we've basically been keeping archives for (in words on the suns existence) a blink of a watch. it's going to be the backside because 1928. The sunlight is going via sessions in bigger and decreased activity and is generic. additionally it particularly is not activity in terms of fusion, yet of photograph voltaic flares and sunlight spots. The sunlight isn't dying. The cosmic rays concern is nonsense. (they arrive besides) additionally we've photograph voltaic minimums (and maximums) each 11 years or so. SO unwell depart you to artwork out no remember if it is risky or no longer. And ultimately, everywhere you acquire this from, relax assure that earlier NASA introduced the utmost exchange into anticipated to be low, those comparable human beings have been little doubt telling us how we've been all going to be cooked by employing photograph voltaic flares. The doomsday nutters make this up as they bypass alongside.

It will take billions and billions of years before the sun "dies." However, life on earth will cease to exist a long, long time before that moment that the sun disappears.
