I think in many cases, it depends on the religion. Here in the U.S. Christianity has been made 'uncool' through political correctness, and religious fanatics. Islam however, is growing. Why? Because it's popular now, and other religions are expected not only to allow Muslims religious freedom (which I agree with)...but they are also being expected to erase their own religious practices (mainly Christians) so they don't offend others.. Very scary.
Christian fanatics don't do Christianity any favors. I don't have to beat someone over the head with a bible to make them believe...and if I were the one being hit with it....I'd think Christianity was crap too. By the same token, I want to be able to buy a CHRISTMAS TREE...not a holiday tree. If it were a holiday tree...everyone would buy them for Labor day. If I don't complain about a Menorah and demand that it be called a 'holiday candelabra' ...then I expect to be able to buy a Christmas tree.

In 1990 the statistic was that 8% of American people did not go to church. In 2000 the same statistic was 14%, so religion is declining in importance. Only 2% said they were atheists in the 2000 statistics - I don't know what the statistic was in 1990.

As more, various and different, religions come to prominence in the US, the importance of religion will increase. A greater diversity of religious expression will make religion important to the common man.

I'm not sure if it's growing or declining, but it's importance is increasing. There are so many diverse things going on in the US that it's getting more confusing to me.

There is no 'importance' of religion. Your question says what your position is already so answering this question is moot.
Truth is, religion, like culture is not the responsibility of the government; it is an individual and familial choice.

i dont know that it is declining but i do think that people are having mixed feelings about religion at this point; considering what has occured in the catholic church lately...of course not everyone is catholic but it does say somthing for organized religion in general and shocks people that 'people of god' were real people to and could do henious things and are not 'holy-er than thou'

Probably declining.
Religion is being seen as "lame" or otherwise too demanding. People don't want to follow rules. Or they're ignorant and hate religion for stupid reasons.
