I'm 18 years old and I am just curious how much it is to rent an apartment. I know that I'm going to need a credit report and stuff like that... which I dont have... again i'm only curious. I know that renting in california (southern california) for a 2 bedroom apartment is around $950 a month. what else do i have to take into consideration... utilities... stuff like that. what kind of income would i need? What if i had a second or a third person to split the bills with? I recently got a job as a teller at the bank and will be starting that soon. I am also a hostess at a restaurant. Currently the only bills i pay are for car insurance and my cell phone. I'm just curious because i do not want to have to live pay check to pay check because on top of all of that i would also have school to worry about. Can i make it work?

Obviously it takes money.

The question is:

How much do you need and what do you do to get it?

I answered another question:

"Please help with advice of buying a house?"

Although it is relating to real estate, the answer is regarding money, take a look at it.

People share rentals but the person who's name is on the rental agreement usually gets burned for lots of $$$ when roommates up and leave , (which they do a hundred times a day )
You will be living paycheck to paycheck because those jobs do not pay much $$$ .
How much will you need ?
ADD it up , rent , utilities, car insurance , cell phone , clothing , laundry , groceries .
Start making up your budget now and for starters ,
Look for the roomate wanted listings / share rental (it will take a long time to find a compatible roommate because lots of old horn dog males will be listing) . As a roommate , you usually won't have to pay out the massive initial set up costs .
You can make it work , because thousands of others are , although , if you can work and pay the parents some rent , you can save a bundle . Besides , working 2 jobs , you won't be home much anyway .

A good rule of thumb is your rent should not be more than one third of your total income. Depending on the landlord or management company you will need at least first month and an additional month as security.

If you have any kind of credit score that will be good but if not you may be able to show where you have consistently and responsibly paid bills in the past, i.e. cell phone etc. Landlords do not expect perfect credit because renters usually rent because they have some financial challenges.

I live in the UK but im sure all the usual things would be the same. Always allow double what you think you will spend on food. Also theres gas/electricity/heating and so on. Also think of the long run ... do you want cable? a phone line? broadband? assuking you have axes to pay for local ammenities... tv license. damages/repairs. Then theres whether it is furnished or unfurnished! Youll be suprised how much money you spend just prettying up your pad! Always keep a few hundred in a safe place just in case! Its much cheaper sharing with friends btw but you have to weight out your privacy and sharing! Is it worth it?

youll need first and last months rent and possibly a sercurity deposit. find that out .could wind up being 3 thou to move in .i think the complex renting out will charge you for the credit check. and somtimes no credit is not good.ya might want to start out renting a room .see if the school your gonna go to can help you out finding that .better to room with people with the same agenda.getting an education. also have you looked into financial aid? free money and also loan you money with a cheap intrest rate
